A week in the woods with other LGBT campers

It’s not everyday you get the chance to revert back to being a kid at summer camp. You know what I mean: swimming in the lake, playing a mean game of softball in the afternoon, hiking through the woods, bunking with other campers, toasting marshmallows on the fire. Camp Camp — “America’s premier summer camp for GLBT adults” — is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this August, and being a kid again is just how camp co-directors Susan Clinkenbeard and Kerry Riffle want their campers to feel...continue reading at

In wake of setbacks, gay-marriage backers place newspaper ads
DAVID CRARY/Associated Press

Three major gay-rights groups are taking out full-page advertisements starting Tuesday in 50 newspapers nationwide declaring their determination to keep fighting for same-sex marriage rights despite recent court setbacks.

The media campaign will cost $250,000; its organizers said it was the largest-ever purchase of print advertising space by gay rights supporters.

Roberta Sklar of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force said the ads would run in papers around the country, from The New York Times to The Gazette of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to gay weeklies in Houston, Atlanta and San Diego.

The ads feature photographs of five same-sex couples who have been together as long as 53 years and are endorsed by an array of organizations and individuals, including 11 religious leaders and nine mayors.

"From coast to coast, millions of people and hundreds of organizations are working to protect gay and lesbian families by...continue via

House rejects gay marriage ban amendment
By JIM ABRAMS, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - The House on Tuesday rejected a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, ending for another year a congressional debate that supporters of the ban hope will still reverberate in this fall's election.

The 236-187 vote for the proposal to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman was 47 short of the two-thirds majority needed to advance a constitutional amendment. "The overwhelming majority of the American people support traditional marriage," said Rep. Marilyn Musgrave (news, bio, voting record), R-Colo., sponsor of the amendment. "And the people have a right to know whether their elected representatives agree with them."
Opponents dismissed the proposal as both discriminatory and legislatively irrelevant because...Read the story via Yahoo! News?
