Nearly 40 years after her first U.S. Open championship, tennis legend Billie Jean King will return to Queens later this month with a grand new reason to celebrate.
The National Tennis Center in Flushing, home of the U.S. Open, will be renamed in honor of King, Mayor Bloomberg and U.S. Tennis Association President Franklin Johnson announced yesterday.
"I still can't believe it," the 62-year-old gay tennis star said with tears in her eyes during a press conference at the stadium yesterday. "So rarely are women thought of in this way."...continue at Daily News?
